The Toronto Blue Jays could use one more starting pitcher to round out the rotation. Marcus Stroman has been a letdown so far this season. In 21 games started, Stroman has pitched to an unsightly ERA of 4.92, and a batting average against of .273. That is not a recipe for success. R.A. Dickey has been extremely inconsistent, and is the unfortunate owner of a 4.66 ERA.
So clearly Toronto needs some help. They do not need to make an earth-shattering move here, and quite honestly cannot afford to make one considering the mediocrity of their prospects, but the addition of a solid innings eater would serve them well. Former San Diego Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner would have been a nice addition here, but he has been shipped off to the Miami Marlins.
So who would be a solid piece to add? As terrible as he has been, Shelby Miller of the Arizona Diamondbacks has been made available to teams. Miller has been the biggest disappointment of the season, as the Diamondbacks sent the Atlanta Braves a boatload of top prospects in exchange for him. In 14 games started, Miller has an ERA of 7.14. A change of scenery would probably serve him well, as the immense amount of pressure on him in Arizona has cracked him. Moving away from the team who thought so highly of him would behoove both him and the team.
The only way this move makes sense is if the Blue Jays give up next to nothing for him. A low level prospect or two would be a fair price for Miller, who happens to have many years of control after this season. His team friendly contract should also be accounted for as the Toronto brass scour the starting pitching market in search for depth.
The Blue Jays need pitching help, it is as simple as that. Hopefully the team can get something done before the deadline to better the team.
